Overview

Rock climbing in Nepal:
The many rock climbing sites in Nepal offer an exciting and adventurous opportunity to aficionados of the sport with climbs suitable for both novices and experts.

Balaju (Nagarjun forest)
It is the closest place for rock climbing and is just a 30 minute drive from Kathmandu in the north west part of the city. There are more than 22 climbing routes, from grade 4a to 7b+ overhand climbing. These climbing rocks consist of multi pitches of 65 meters to single pitches at 12 meters. Foreigners are not allowed to enter this site without a Nepali guide.

Hattiban Rock climbing site
This site lies approximately 26 kilometers from Kathmandu and it takes 1 hour to reach there by bus. It is 20 meters walk from the main road. There are more than ten routes for climbing from grade 6a to 7a. It is south facing so it is warm for climbing in winter but hot in summer.

Thame Rock climbing site
It lies at an altitude of 5800 meters in the eastern part of Nepal near Mt. Everest. There are 17 different routes here starting from 4c up to 7c. It consists of multi pitches of 200 meters. It lies in a famous village where two world record holder mountain climbers were also born.

Kakani
It is one of the most popular rock climbing spots for weekends. It lies 29 kilometers northwest of Kathmandu city on the way to Trishuli. The views of Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Gauri Shanker Himal can be enjoyed from the top of the hill. The rock Is only about 20 meters high but the climbing is quite challenging here. There is also an outdoor climbing wall at the mountaineering park nearby. Tents are also present with outdoor cooking and shower facilities. But places must be reserved in advance due to the popularity of the location.

Bimal Nagar ( Near Bandipur)
140 kilometers to the South West of Kathmandu city and 60 kilometers if you are coming from Pokhara. It is 5 hours drive from Kathmandu by bus on the way to Pokhara. There is a 55 meter rock face with four pitches consisting of some single pitches. It is five minutes away from the main road.
